Formula relating viewing distance to ppi

In a forum post on 3/5/05 at photo.net, ( http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00BMqZ ) apparently based on experience in the large photo print business, Kelly Flanigan states, "Most eyes consider 2 arc minutes to be great; maybe 1 arc minute for a top gun pilot."

1 degree = 60 arcminutes, therefore 2 arcminutes = 1/30 degree = .0333 degree
tan .0333 = .0005818 = pixel height in inches/viewing distance in inches.
Rearranging ---

viewing distance(ft) = 140/pixel resolution (ppi)
