HOW TO MAKE A SPIGOT FERRULE

Conolon blanks intended to be 2 piece have a “hump”. This hump is where a ferrule is to be installed. The hump is also called “ferrule station buildup”. In some blanks the hump is quite visible. In others it is less visible but can be detected by sliding your hand up and down the blank and feeling a hump. We will be installing a spigot ferrule in the middle of this hump.
1. Wrap a turn of masking tape in the middle of the hump.

2. Cut through the middle of the tape with a fine tooth (#32) hacksaw using a miter box to assure a good square cut.

3. Measure the I.D. of the top section.

4. Find a piece of scrap blank where, at some point, the O.D. matches the tip I.D. (or stick the scrap blank into the top section until it binds up, same thing) and where there are at least a couple of inches of blank on either side of that point. Cut the scrap piece (we’ll call it the spigot from now on) so that 2 to 2 ˝ inches slides into the top section before it snugs up. Put a pencil mark where the top fits snugly. A 3/8 inch clearance gap should be left between the top and bottom sections to allow for wear. Therefore put another pencil mark 3/8 inch below the first mark. This is where the spigot SHOULD emerge from the lower section.

5. Cut the spigot to about 5 inches overall.

BACK TO TIPS
Measure the inside diameter of the upper blank section. Find a a piece of scrap blank where the outside diameter matches the inside diameter of the top.

Cut the scrap piece (spigot-to-be) so that 2 to 2 1/2 inches fit into the upper blank before it snugs up.

Put a pencil mark on the spigot-to-be where it fits into the top section; place another pencil mark 3/8 inches below that. Cut piece to a length of about 5 inches. This is the rough spigot.
